Armchairs, chairs and stools in Russian art of the 18th-20th centuries

Armchairs, chairs and stools in Russian art of the 18th-20th centuries
18 August 2022—9 January 2023

This exhibition will introduce viewers to the furniture preserved in the Russian Museum, a collection the public is not very familiar with. It will also open up a new perspective on well-known Russian works of art from Yury Vasnetsov, Alexander Vedernikov, Orest Kiprensky, Boris Kustodiev, Vladimir Makovsky, Evsei Moiseyenko, Tatyana Nazarenko, Olga Ostroumova-Lebedeva and many other distinguished artists.

The “protagonists” of the exhibition are furniture pieces used for sitting: from antique benches and chests to chairs and armchairs from contemporary designers. Alongside them are depictions of furniture and people seated on it, in various types of art. The chair is examined as a detail of the surroundings and as a symbolic object. What kinds of chairs exist? What are they made of? What do people do while seated? What poses do they adopt? What does an empty chair mean? A synthesis of painting, graphic art, sculpture, applied art, and design, the Russian Museum’s exhibition stimulates ideas on these questions and more.

The exhibition is supported by SeverstalPower Machines, LentaNordgoldSvezaFun&Sun company.

30 paintings from the life of Peter the Great

9 June 2022—9 August 2022

The exhibition “30 paintings from the life of Peter the Great” is taking place on the Field of Mars in Saint Petersburg. The project is a reconstruction of an exhibit that was held 150 years ago at the same location and is dedicated to the 350th anniversary of the first Russian emperor. Fourteen original paintings from the 1872 exhibition were discovered in the State Russian Museum’s funds. They were digitally restored and will be exhibited in the form of outstanding quality canvas prints. The honour to fill the gaps and create modern interpretations of the same historical subjects was granted to the students, alumni and professors of Saint-Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts.
