Barry Cawston. Russia: Far from Black and White

Barry Cawston. Russia: Far from Black and White
26 September 2019—4 November 2019
The exhibition presents works by famous English photographer Barry Cawston.

Barry Cawston, who travels around the world in search of scenes for his photographs, seeks out and finds beauty everywhere, often taking pictures of objects or scenes that not everyone would consider worthy of being captured. The combination of bright colours with a special atmosphere of elegance and a certain detachment is a recognizable, “signature” style of the photographer.

His first visit to Moscow and St. Petersburg in 2014 produced an indelible impression on Cawston, and he returned to Russia in 2017 with a camera to embark on a journey from the White Sea to the Caucasus. This exhibition and the catalog are the fruit of Barry Cawston’s engagement with Russia and, no less importantly, the chance for all of us to get to know our own country better. The photographer gives the Russian viewer the opportunity to see their own land, their own towns and villages, people and vast spaces through the eyes of a genuinely interested person.

The exhibition will feature 55 photographs created between 2014 and 2018.

For the Glory of Russia. Entrepreneurs and Patrons in Russia in the 18th – Early 20th Centuries

6 June—5 August 2024

Merchants, the “third estate”, at that time, were the basis of Russia’s economic power. The Stroganovs, the Demidovs and other entrepreneurs sometimes established entire “empires” with their own settlements, roads and internal regulations. The richest merchants became nobles and patrons of the arts. The exhibition is unique, both in the themes it explores and in the works it presents.
