At the end of December 1998 the Russian Museum received a donation of art from local collectors, brothers Jacob and Joseph Rzhevsky. Their donation includes unique works of painting, graphic art, sculpture and applied art. It took more than half a century to put all these works together. Now the collection consists of 503 works mostly paintings and graphic art of the second half of the XIX century - early XX centiry. Most noteworthy are the works of Ivan Aivazovsky, Mstislav Dobuzhinsky, Nikolai Kolmakov, Pyotr Konchalovsky, Boris Kustodiev, Vladimir Lebedev, Ilya Mashkov, Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin and others. Furniture, long-case and mantel clocks of the 18th and 19th centuries from the Western Europe and Russia hold a specific place in the Rzhevsky Brothers collection. Among the porcelain works of special interest are the works from the Imperial Porcelain Factory, the Gardner and the Kuznetsov Porcelain Factory, Sevres and Meissen Porcelain Factories, as well as Berlin Royal Porcelain Manufactory.

Merchants, the “third estate”, at that time, were the basis of Russia’s economic power. The Stroganovs, the Demidovs and other entrepreneurs sometimes established entire “empires” with their own settlements, roads and internal regulations. The richest merchants became nobles and patrons of the arts. The exhibition is unique, both in the themes it explores and in the works it presents.
