Evgeny Romashko

The Russian Land. 2018
25 November 2022—30 January 2023

This exhibition of works by People’s Artist of the Russian Federation and Head of the Academic Painting Faculty of the Moscow State Stroganov Academy of Art and Industry Evgeny Romashko is timed to coincide with the artist’s 60th birthday. Approximately 70 works of his from over the years will be displayed.

Evgeny Romashko is an heir to the traditions of Russian landscape art and a proponent of the Moscow School of painting. Always working en plein air and in one sitting, the artist has a keen feel for the atmosphere of a location and the complex and ever-changing dynamics of light. His work is always a “mood landscape”, with the warmth and intimacy of Levitan, but done in an emotional colour scheme, uncluttered and free of random details. Romashko acutely senses the aesthetics and the landscape of the city – the intense rhythm of life in the capital. He often finds what looks to be a classic, en plein air landscape among the bustling and noisy city streets. In his landscape images, Evgeny Romashko has shown an ability to capture the grace and subtle emotion in what might seem to be trivial scenes from life in the megalopolis, and to retain a respect for the ephemeral symbols of time.
