The AZ Museum (Museum of Anatoly Zverev) presents one of its most successful exhibition projects "Faces / Faces / Muzzles".
The exhibition is timed to coincide with the 90th anniversary of the famous Moscow artist Anatoly Zverev (1931–1986) and is dedicated to the phenomenon of casual portraiture in Russian art of the 20th and 21st centuries.
The exhibition in the Russian Museum will feature more than 90 works by the artists of the sixties and contemporary authors - A. Zverev, D. Plavinsky, V. Yakovlev, V. Nemukhin, V. Yankilevsky, O. Tselkov, M. Shemyakin, L. Kropivnitsky, M Shpindler, B. Sveshnikov, E. Steinberg, L. Purygin, I. Lubennikov, S. Shutov, N. Nesterova, L. Rotar, N. Turnova, G. Bruskin, G. Bogomolov, E. Zelenin, I. Voroshilova and photographs of artists captured by Anatoly Brusilovsky and Igor Palmin.
Alexander Borovsky, the Head of the Department of the latest trends reflects upon the exhibition in the Russian Museum: “The exhibition“ Faces / Faces / Muzzles ” is a good start for St. Petersburg audience to get to know the AZ Museum. The organizers of the exhibition chose "a lot of magical changes of a dear face" as its core. These famous lines by A. Fet belong to the genre of intimate lyrics. However, the exposition material dramatizes the motive of the face.
The "face" in the art of the sixties and seventies appears in many ways: in the traditional "portrait" plan, with an emphasis on psychologism, emotional state, and in the triumph of the grotesque. The exhibition "Faces / Faces / Muzzles" has its own drama, which, I am sure, will capture the attention of the audience”.
Anatoly Zverev is one of the most striking characters in the post-war Moscow art scene, a real "hero" of unofficial art. His work is extremely diverse: a wonderful draftsman, a daring avant-garde artist, an experimenter, an artist with his own recognizable poetics. His creative life is steeped in its own unique mythology, often mundane, in many ways dramatic, but surprisingly vivid.
Despite his early demise, he left a huge creative legacy, about 30 thousands of art pieces, and his works are in the collections of many major collectors of unofficial Soviet art, museums around the world - from the Tretyakov Gallery to the MoMA in New York.
For more than 6 years, the AZ Museum has been showing and updating the heritage of artists of the second half of the twentieth century in a series of exhibitions, each of which becomes a high-profile event in the cultural life of Moscow.
The collection of works by non-conformist artists collected by the Director General and founder of the AZ Museum Natalia Opaleva is one of the most significant today. The collection was most vividly presented in Florence at the Franco Zeffirelli Foundation, and then on the Free Flight project, which in 2019 opened the West Wing of the New Tretyakov Gallery.
