Georgy Kovenchuk: Perception of the World. Painting, Graphic Art, Plastic Art, Video

15 March 2002—8 April 2002
The exhibition presents the oeuvre of modern St Petersburg artist Georgy Kovenchuk, displaying works of art created from the late 1960s to the present day. After studying under Alexei Pakhomov at the Department of Graphic Art in the Academy of Arts (Ilya Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture), Kovenchuk worked as a poster designer, engraver and illustrator. He also painted canvases, created objects and decorated oyster shells. Among the more interesting exhibits are Georgy Kovenchuk's works of 'fax-art' - graphic representations employing unconventional plastic means and the possibilities of modern telecommunications as variants of new artistic technologies. Georgy Kovenchuk's oeuvre is noted for its rare versatility, irony and sense of invention. An indefatigable innovator, he is a universal artist with an innate feeling for other cultures. Works by Georgy Kovenchuk have been acquired by the Tretyakov Gallery, Russian Museum, Museum of the History of St Petersburg, foreign galleries and private collectors.

For the Glory of Russia. Entrepreneurs and Patrons in Russia in the 18th – Early 20th Centuries

6 June—5 August 2024

Merchants, the “third estate”, at that time, were the basis of Russia’s economic power. The Stroganovs, the Demidovs and other entrepreneurs sometimes established entire “empires” with their own settlements, roads and internal regulations. The richest merchants became nobles and patrons of the arts. The exhibition is unique, both in the themes it explores and in the works it presents.

The Russian Museum offered immediate support with the restoration of 22 art pieces. During the restoration, which lasted over 6 months, the staff of the Russian Museum not only eliminated the mechanical damage that the art objects had received at the time of the explosion, but also completely restored all 22 masterpieces, revealing their original appearance and artistic concept.
