TEN

Niklas Goldbach
Born in 1973 in Witten, Germany, lives in Berlin
The “TEN” is an absurd staging of the process demonstrating the way the power mechanisms operate. The artist’s protagonist wears a white shirt and black trousers. Goldbach calls him “the placeholder”, a prototype of a modern citizen, while one can find it hard to understand whether he is a banker of waiter, master or servant. With help of advanced digital technologies the artists clones his hero into an anonymous crowd of identical persons. Filmed in a suite in the Berlin luxury hotel and from the top of Mount Lycabettus in Athens, the video work TEN refers to Charles Wright Mills’ concept of the 'power elite' as well as to the idea of mythological elites and ‘Top-10’ concept.
In the sterile and de-individualized luxurious suite the group of ten men perform ambiguous actions and rituals freed from emotions or distinctions. The “TEN” presents a gloomy image of a fragile system of power, only worshipping the formal effect and its own self.
