Inside the Marble Palace (Sound, Dance, Performance)

Xavier Veilhan. Le film du Japon. 2002
16 May 2018—30 June 2018
Film “Le film du Japon” (2002) by Xavier Veilhan will be on display between May 16 and June 30 as part of the project “Inside the Marble Palace (Sound, Dance, Performance).”

Xavier Veilhan is a French artist and sculptor who works with popular imagination, be it the world of Pop Art, comics, cinema, or video games. One of his earliest large-scale works, “One, Two,” was created at the Russian Museum, within the legendary exhibition “Territory of Art. Laboratory” in 1990. In 2009, he created a widely popular project at the Versailles palace complex, which included a series of colourful sculptures depicting his famous architects as well as Yuri Gagarin. In 2015, he made a sculpture of Daft Punk band members without their iconic robot helmets. The musicians commented, “If someone wants to see us the way we are in real life, they will have to look at the sculpture.” In 2017, Veilhan represented France at the 57th Venice biennale. The artist transformed the national pavilion into a music studio. “Le film du Japon” was filmed at the Center for Contemporary Art Kitakyushu, Japan. The characters on screen perform some kind of a national dance and construct sculptural mobiles.

“Inside the Marble Palace (Sound, Dance, Performance)” is a joint project of the Russian Museum and Centre National des Arts Plastiques, Paris, France.

“Inside the Marble Palace” is a series of nine exhibitions exploring performativity in which dance and sound play a significant part. Ever since the time of its emergence, video art was closely connected with performance. The possibility to record and show at the same time, the use of time as one of the main elements — all of this provides common ground between performance and video art. The artists visualize sound and vocalize space; saturate their works with dense sound or deafening silence; refer to the performance tradition and avant-garde choreography; reinterpret popular tunes and film stills that serve as cultural archaeology and a breeding ground for their art.

June 14, Thursday, 7 p.m., the Marble Palace will host an ambient & sound art live performance by Jean-Yves Leloup, founder of the band Radiomentale.

For the Glory of Russia. Entrepreneurs and Patrons in Russia in the 18th – Early 20th Centuries

6 June—5 August 2024

Merchants, the “third estate”, at that time, were the basis of Russia’s economic power. The Stroganovs, the Demidovs and other entrepreneurs sometimes established entire “empires” with their own settlements, roads and internal regulations. The richest merchants became nobles and patrons of the arts. The exhibition is unique, both in the themes it explores and in the works it presents.

In July 2023, an explosion in the city centre of Taganrog damaged several artworks at the Golden Names of the Silver Age exhibition in the Taganrog Art Museum. The Russian Museum offered immediate support with the restoration of 22 art pieces. During the restoration, which lasted over 6 months, the staff of the Russian Museum not only eliminated the mechanical damage that the art objects had received at the time of the explosion, but also completely restored all 22 masterpieces, revealing their original appearance and artistic concept.
