Masterpieces from Taganrog Rescued at the Russian Museum
24 April—19 May 2024

In July 2023, an explosion in the city centre of Taganrog damaged several artworks at the Golden Names of the Silver Age exhibition in the Taganrog Art Museum.

The Russian Museum offered immediate support with the restoration of 22 art pieces. Eighteen paintings, three graphic works and one sculpture were badly damaged. Among them were the works by Konstantin Korovin, Zinaida Serebryakova, Philip Malyavin, Nicholas Roerich, Stanislav Zhukovsky, Valentin Serov, Viktor Borisov-Musatov and other artists.

Many canvases were torn off by the striking elements. All objects were covered with cement and glass dust, and glass fragments were found in many stretchers. Christopher Gevorgyan’s marble sculpture Portrait of a Boy was heavily damaged: it broke into two pieces. The painting Rebekah’s Blessing by Henri Chopin suffered numerous ruptures. The Russian Museum experts hurried to Taganrog. They examined the damaged masterpieces with the help of a mobile laboratory and prepared them for shipping to St Petersburg for thorough restoration. While still on site, the Russian Museum professionals made photographic records of the damages and fixed the problem areas with protective tapes. Within a few days, all artworks were packed in special boxes. A truck equipped to maintain optimum temperature and humidity conditions delivered them urgently to the Russian Museum.

Before the restoration each artwork underwent extensive technological and chemical-biological studies to determine the restoration programme and methods. Each piece required a unique approach depending on its damage. During the restoration, which lasted over 6 months, the staff of the Russian Museum not only eliminated the mechanical damage that the art objects had received at the time of the explosion, but also completely restored all 22 masterpieces, revealing their original appearance and artistic concept. Restorers repaired canvas breaks, replaced damaged stretchers, recovered the transparency of faded varnish, and removed later paint layers and time-yellowed varnish. Restoration primer and toning were applied in places where the colour layer had been lost.

For the Glory of Russia. Entrepreneurs and Patrons in Russia in the 18th – Early 20th Centuries

6 June—5 August 2024

Merchants, the “third estate”, at that time, were the basis of Russia’s economic power. The Stroganovs, the Demidovs and other entrepreneurs sometimes established entire “empires” with their own settlements, roads and internal regulations. The richest merchants became nobles and patrons of the arts. The exhibition is unique, both in the themes it explores and in the works it presents.
