Pop Mechanics by Sergei Kuryokhin

Oleg Kotelnikov. That’s Great! 1985. Tempera on corrugated cardboard
20 December 2024—27 January 2025

The exhibition is dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Sergei Kuryokhin, a musician, composer, screenwriter and actor, founder of the legendary Pop Mechanics band that became one of the most important cultural phenomena of the second half of the 20th century.

With his creative authority, broad thinking and artistic foresight, the Captain, as Sergei Kuryokhin was called by his friends and followers, was able to bring together the outstanding creators of his time: poets, musicians, artists and directors. The role of Pop Mechanics for the advanced audience of the 1980s and 1990s is comparable to the significance of Mikhail Matiushin and Alexei Kruchenykh’s futuristic opera Victory over the Sun for the generation of the classical Russian Avant-Garde.

The visitors to the exhibition will be able to feel the atmosphere of Pop Mechanics concerts, to watch TV interviews with Sergei Kuryokhin, to find themselves next to him in the shooting stage or to see his personal belongings and musical instruments as well as the works of the artists who took part in the concerts – all those precious evidences of that time.

The exhibition offers an insight into Pop Mechanics’ “mechanism” which was driven by the very lives of the Captain and his fellows.

The exhibition will also feature a choreographic performance and a concert of Sergei Kuryokhin’ music.
