Vadim Ovchinnikov is one of the most outstanding characters of underground of Leningrad, a member of TEII (Association of Experimental Fine Art) and of the Fund of Free culture, a memder and theorist of a group New artists. In 1989-1996 a workshop of V.Ovchinnikov in Pushkinskaya, 10, was a place where atmosphere of privacy and creation was carefully maintained. It was a posthumous exhibition of his works and presentation of a book Vadim Ovchinnikov. Transactions with which renovated Pushkinskaya, 10 was opened in 1998. Works of V.Ovchinnikov were several times exhibited in the Russian museum. In 1993 his personal exhibition was held in the Marble palace. Later his works were showcased as a part of exhibitions of Contemporary Art Department. The first five years and Abstraction in Russia, XXc. At the exhibition which opens in the Marble palace, letters, collages and about 30 works of painting of the end of 1970s - the first half of 1990s will be shown. They all come from collection of the Russian museum and from private collections in St.Petersburg.

Merchants, the “third estate”, at that time, were the basis of Russia’s economic power. The Stroganovs, the Demidovs and other entrepreneurs sometimes established entire “empires” with their own settlements, roads and internal regulations. The richest merchants became nobles and patrons of the arts. The exhibition is unique, both in the themes it explores and in the works it presents.

Masterpieces from Taganrog Rescued at the Russian Museum

In July 2023, an explosion in the city centre of Taganrog damaged several artworks at the Golden Names of the Silver Age exhibition in the Taganrog Art Museum. The Russian Museum offered immediate support with the restoration of 22 art pieces. During the restoration, which lasted over 6 months, the staff of the Russian Museum not only eliminated the mechanical damage that the art objects had received at the time of the explosion, but also completely restored all 22 masterpieces, revealing their original appearance and artistic concept.
