Red Tram. 1996. Oil on canvas. Property of author.
11 December 2013—14 April 2014

Vladimir Yashke is the legendary figure in the Avant-garde of St. Petersburg. He is known as the "grandfather" of Mitki art group because he is the older participant of this famous phenomenon of the art of Petersburg. But Yashke had become the independent and outstanding artist far before his meeting with Mitki art group. Yashke is working actively even nowadays, mostly for himself, in his individual manner that is marked by the free manner of painting and close attention to the problems of colour and facture that are most significant for the painting of the 20th century. The works by Vladimir Yashke are stored in the collection of the Russian museum and other museums in Russia and also in the prestigious private collections of Russia and foreign countries. The exposition in Marble Palace for the first time ever presents the basic stages of Yashke's creative path. On the exhibition devoted to the 65th birth anniversary of this artist about 100 works are on show. Alongside with the paintings that organically combines romantic and humor, chamber motifs and grotesque superfluity of form there are presented his early so-called Sevastopol sketches, graphic works and pastels. These works are given from private collections of Moscow and St. Petersburg and from the Russian Museum.
