Zaven Arshakuni. Painting, Graphic Art and Applied Art

6 March 2002—8 April 2002
Zaven Arshakuni was born in Leningrad in 1932. In 1961, he graduated from the Ilya Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. A former member of Group Eleven, Arshakuni joined the St Petersburg Diaghilev Art Centre and the St Petersburg Academy of Modern Art in the 1990s. Zaven Arshakuni's temperamental and intense oeuvre seems at odds with the serene and restrained painterly manner of most artists from St Petersburg. His world is full of bright tones, unusual colour combinations and creatures and objects that are more like exciting figments of the imagination than real prototypes. The exhibition reflects the diverse quests of an artist who works equally well in painting, graphic art, applied art and theatrical design. The show includes more than 150 works by this leading artist from St Petersburg.
