ILANA RAVIV

31 October 2007—20 January 2008
For the first time the Russian Museum presents the one-woman exhibition of American-Israeli artist trained in the USA. The exhibition introduces 2 series of paintings of the 1980s and 2000s: Alice in Wildland and Magna Mater (Great Mother). The first cycle is dedicated to children's images and filled with maternal anxiety for child's destiny in contemporary aggressive world. The second cycle interprets the significant women's images of the world history, mythology and literature. Ilana Raviv interprets her oeuvre as 'synthetic realism', the way of reuniting of the artist's private world with the environment in one metaphorical space of her not associated with any existing style artworks. The artist re-examines in her own way themes and methods both of the Great Old masters such as Velasquez, Veronese, El Greco and the modernism classic artists: Picasso, Matisse, and Chagall. Ilana Raviv's paintings are distinguished for expression and vivid emotions. The exhibition was supported by the Embassy of Israel in the Russian Federation. It was accompanied by a catalogue in English and Russian.
