Leonid Krivitsky

Spring in Assisi. 2000. Oil on canvas. 92x120.
31 May 2017—31 July 2017

Leonid Krivitsky (1932-2015) is the author of monumental paintings dedicated to the themes of war and revolution. For more than 20 years he had been teaching painting at the Leningrad State Pedagogical Institute named after A.I.Herzen. Student of I.Serebriany, Krivitsky was a master of creating lyrical portraits and also executed a landscape cycle while working in Italy.  He also made paintings commissioned by Art Foundation of the USSR, among which are “Lenin -  Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars” (1969), “Death of a Commissar” (1975), “Portrait of the Young Republic People’s Commissar A.Kollontai” (1969). His memories of the childhood in the besieged Leningrad are reflected in such works as “Siege. Leningrad is speaking” (1967).

Exhibition in St. Michael's Castle will include around 50 graphic works, paintings and sculptures from the collection of the artist’s family. Among them on display is a triptych dedicated to the Holocaust, the last artwork by Krivitsky. It had been kept in the artist’s workshop and had never been seen by the wide public. Creating the triptych took Krivitsky 10 years of experimenting with texture and developing the technique of the so-called “volume painting”. Expression and melodiousness of the triptych images is the result of the meticulous study of the Renaissance artistic language.

The exhibition is opening at 4 PM.
