The exhibition is held in the Garden Lobby of the Mikhailovsky Palace.
The exhibition is dedicated to Ivan Tvorozhnikov (1848–1919), an outstanding Russian genre painter who was active in the late 19th through early 20th centuries. Most of Tvorozhnikov’s paintings are typical scenes from rural life, which he knew well, imbued with empathy for the troubles and hardships endured by Russian peasants. Tvorozhnikov, who was once a serf himself, created an entire gallery’s worth of vibrant images of his fellow villagers, all painted with bold, confident brushstrokes. Tvorozhnikov exhibited his works far and wide, in Russia, Western Europe and North America. Many of his paintings went through numerous reproductions and were purchased by private collectors and major state museums.
Despite fame in his lifetime, the name of Ivan Tvorozhnikov is only marginally familiar to contemporary art lovers. Today the Russian Museum, which boasts an extensive collection of Tvorozhnikov’s works, is restoring the master’s name to its erstwhile glory, introducing viewers to some of Tvorozhnikov’s best paintings and graphic artworks from the museum’s holdings.
