Johann Gottlieb Georgi’s Description of All the Peoples Inhabiting the Russian Empire...

Christoph Melchior Roth. Kyrgyz Man on Horseback. Coloured etching. State Russian Museum
13 June—9 September 2024

The showcases of the Academy Rooms present illustrations from the rare edition of Johann Gottlieb Georgi’s Description of All the Peoples Inhabiting the Russian Empire: Their Daily Rituals, Customs, Clothes, Dwellings, Exercises, Amusement, Religions and Other Memorability (St Petersburg, 1799). This multi-volume academic work was first published in German and Russian in 1775–1780.

Johann Gottlieb Georgi (1729, Pomerania – 1802, St Petersburg) was a doctor, naturalist, traveller, ethnographer and academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He came to Russia in 1770. In the same year, together with other specialists, he went on a scientific expedition, the purpose of which was a comprehensive study of Russian lands. Over four years he visited various Russian regions – from the Volga region to Altai and Lake Baikal. Johann Gottlieb Georgi studied the everyday life, beliefs and customs of indigenous peoples who inhabited remote territories of the Russian Empire. He was one of the first scientists to provide an ethnographic description of the peoples of Southern Siberia. During his journeys, he not only took notes, but also drew sketches of clothes, dwellings and utensils, made maps of the studied lands (including the map of Lake Baikal and its shores) and gathered a collection of studied objects. Based on the collected materials, Johann Gottlieb Georgi provided the first consolidated ethnographic description of Russia. The book comprises more than a hundred engraved illustrations made after Georgi’s sketches and drawings that he created from life during the expedition. The engravings were made by masters of the Engraving Chamber of the Academy of Sciences, including Christoph Melchior Roth (1720 ? – 1798) who was one of the leading engravers of that time.

The illustrations for the book Description of All the Peoples Inhabiting the Russian Empire... are still of great interest both from the artistic and academic points of view, since they depict bygone details of life and daily routine of the indigenous peoples of Russia.
