The artist Pavel Vasilyevich Zhukovsky (1845-1912) was the son of the great Russian poet Vasily Zhukovsky and the daughter of the German painter Gerhardt Wilhelm von Reutern. His work is little known to art lovers today. But in the last third of the 19th century Pavel Zhukovsky was quite well known in social and cultural circles. Due to his closeness to the Imperial Court, he did a lot for the development of art education and museum work in Russia. In addition, he was a friend with many prominent people of his time, including Emperor Alexander III, the writer Ivan Turgenev and the composer Richard Wagner, for whom he executed the sketches for the sets and costumes for the first performance of Wagner's opera Parsifal.
The works of Pavel Zhukovsky bear the stamp of his passion for Italian Renaissance painting, religious and antique themes. Their execution and figurative interpretation allow us to refer the artist's work to the academic style of late European Romanticism and Symbolism.
The exhibition features paintings and graphic works by Pavel Zhukovsky from the collection of the State Russian Museum.
