History of the Russian Museum in archive photographs. To the 125th anniversary of the Russian Museum
21 May 2023—3 July 2023
The exhibition in the courtyard of the Stroganov Palace dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the founding of the Russian museum opens on the eve of the Museum Night and a week before the celebration of City Day, the 320th anniversary of the founding of St. Petersburg. The exposition introduces archival photographs from the museum funds, which reflect the most important moments in the history of the world's largest collection of Russian art. About 90 well-known and unfamiliar photographs will allow the audience to get acquainted with the most vivid and significant pages of the museum chronicle.
The exhibition presents materials devoted to the preparation and opening of the first exposition of the Russian museum, reorganisation of the museum collection after the October Revolution, including the time of active experiments in the field of museum business and the formation of the image of the exposition, which has been preserved up to the present day.
A special section will include materials related to the work of the museum during the Great Patriotic War and the Siege of Leningrad, as well as the restoration of the historical interiors of the Mikhailovsky palace halls and the return of masterpieces of Russian painting and sculpture to the museum halls.
The exposition is rounded off by materials covering the work of the museum at the present stage. These include the process of restoring the interiors of the Mikhailovsky castle, Marble and Stroganov palaces, which were handed over to the Russian museum at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s, the opening of the Summer garden and Peter the Great's Summer Palace to visitors after reconstruction, as well as the implementation of new major exhibition and restoration projects.

The Russian museum would like to thank the Logistic group "Admiral" and ANO Free Artists of St. Petersburg for its help in organising the exhibition.
