“Sentiments”. Exhibition of photographs by Innocentius, Bishop of Aleksandrov and Yuriev-Polsky

Christ in the Dungeon
7 July 2023—29 August 2023

An exhibition of photographs by Innocentius, Bishop of Aleksandrov and Yuriev-Polsky, is open in the courtyard of the Stroganov Palace.

Bishop Innocentius on his work in photography:
“People, churches, houses, trees… These are all categories of the created world. They say of the landscape, of the world of nature in which we live, that it is the Lord’s Garment, as in “covering yourself with light as with a garment” (Psalm 104:2). And man is the object of His Divine Love. Physical light, as a reflection of the Light Divine, permeates the spiritual essence of everything that surrounds us, be it a house, a tree, or a human being. Like a great artist, Light paints everything around us for our eyes, filling the objects with a wondrous vital energy. It is undoubtedly through this splendour that we get to know God and the innermost life of the world.
As a creator, I aggregate my memories associatively, paying attention to what I have seen before and what is close to my heart. I would like to hope that I am able, through the medium of photography, to allow viewers to experience my mood and elicit an emotional response from them.
Photography is emerging today as a powerful tool to aid in our search for the spiritual meaning of objects and phenomena, something which is concealed from our eyes. Light fills these things with wondrous life-energy. I believe this energy is itself the knowing of this meaning. It cannot fail to evoke a feeling of blessed joy, which is the feeling I wish to share with you”.
Yakov Yakovlev was born in 1947 in the town of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. In the early 1990s he was ordained to the priesthood and took monastic vows under the name of Innocentius, eventually becoming a bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church in 2011. The Right Reverend Innocentius is currently serving as Bishop of Aleksandrov and Yuriev-Polsky. He is a member of the Artists’ Union of Russia (since 1975) and corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Arts (since 2020).
