Russian Folk Icon and Lubok

30 march 2001—15 may 2001
The exhibition comprises fifty-eight works of art - nineteenth-century icons and traditional lubok folk prints - restored by students of the Nikolai Roerich School of Art in St Petersburg. This is the first ever display of the works of nineteenth-century folk icon painters in St Petersburg. Most of the icons are noted for their bright tones, with the prevalence of the colour red. Works painted by the Old Believers constitute a special group. The show also contains works of nineteenth-century graphic art. Several exhibits illustrate experimental quests and new methods of restoration. Restoration work was carried out under the tutelage of such teachers of the Nikolai Roerich School of Art as I. Yarygina, O. Petrova and N. Lebedeva. The exhibition includes works of art from museums in Arkhangelsk, Great Ustyug, Yaroslavl, Rybinsk, Kargopole, Velsk and Kenozero, as well as from the collections of the St Petersburg Theological Academy, the V. S. Samsonov collection and the Nikolai Roerich School of Art.

The Russian Museum exhibition project Artists on War and Peace can be seen as a diptych comprised of two exhibitions: Images of Military Life in Russian Art of the 16th to 20th Centuries and Home and Family. Images of Peaceful Life. They explore two existential aspects of human life perceived as polar opposites. The first half of the diptych features scenes of everyday life during wartime, while the other focuses on the theme of the home and family as guardian of the moral values of the Russian people.
