Regicide of 11 March 1801 Bicentenary exhibition of Emperor Paul I's assassination in St Michael's Castle

23 march 2001—19 june 2001
The exhibition examines the life and death of Emperor Paul I (1796-1801), murdered in St Michael's Castle in a palace coup. The show includes works of art and historical documents from the collections of the Russian Museum, Hermitage and other cultural institutions in St Petersburg, Moscow and Saratov. Among the rarities on show are Martin-Ferdinand Quadal's monumental Coronation Ceremony of Paul I, a detailed reproduction of the ceremonial transfer of the remains of Peter III (Paul's murdered father), an icon of Paul belonging to Count Arakcheyev, and the golden snuffbox used to kill the Emperor. The exhibition also traces the vast iconography of Paul and various items relating to such aspects of his rule as foreign and domestic policy, court life and the Russian Army.
