Day of Lifting of the Siege of Leningrad is one of the Days of Military Honor celebrated in the Russian Armed Forces. It is observed on January 27.
The Days of Military Honor in Russia are special memorable dates dedicated to the country's most outstanding victories. Most of them are not public holidays, but they are still considered very important.
The Siege of Leningrad (also referred to as the Leningrad Blockade) was one of the longest and most destructive sieges in world history. It started on September 8, 1941 when the German troops severed the last road to the city of Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). The siege lasted for two years, four months, two weeks, and five days and was finally lifted on January 27, 1944.
During the siege, a lot of historic landmarks and civil infrastructure outside the defensive perimeter were destroyed. Approximately 1.5 million soldiers and civilians died due to bombardment and starvation. This makes the Leningrad Blockade the most lethal siege in history.
Day of Lifting of the Siege of Leningrad has been observed since 1995. This day is dedicated to the residents of the city who demonstrated outstanding courage and heroism during the dreadful siege.
