It started on September 8, 1941 when the German troops severed the last road to the city of Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). The siege lasted for two years, four months, two weeks, and five days and was finally lifted on January 27, 1944.

During the siege, a lot of historic landmarks and civil infrastructure outside the defensive perimeter were destroyed. Approximately 1.5 million soldiers and civilians died due to bombardment and starvation. This makes the Leningrad Blockade the most lethal siege in history.
