The State Russian Museum is the world’s largest depository of Russian art. The museum collection comprises over 450,000 works dating from the 10th to the 21st centuries – from icons to pieces by contemporary artists. The museum boasts numerous works by renowned artists including Ivan Aivazovsky, Karl Brullov, Viktor Vasnetsov, Mikhail Vrubel, Arkhip Kuindzhi, Boris Kustodiev, Kazimir Malevich, Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, Ilya Repin, Nicholas Roerich, Vasily Surikov, Pavel Filonov and many others. The museum also holds major collections of folk art, decorative and applied art, and sculpture.
The decision to found the Russian Museum was taken by Emperor Alexander III. In 1895, Nicholas II signed a decree “On the establishment of a special institution under the name ‘The Emperor Alexander III Russian Museum’ and on the allocation for this purpose of the Mikhailovsky Palace, acquired for the crown, with all its wings, service buildings and garden”. In May of the same year, the reconstruction of the palace interiors for the future museum displays began under the supervision of architect Vasily Svinin. On 3 May 1895, the “Regulations on the Museum” were approved. The Russian Museum officially opened its doors to the public on 19 (7) March 1898.
Today, the State Russian Museum is a unique architectural and artistic complex in the historic centre of St Petersburg.
