Imperial Director of the Russian Museum

To mark its 130th anniversary, the Russian Museum is opening an exhibition dedicated to Grand Duke George Mikhailovich Romanov, the first Director of the Russian Museum, an art collector, and a distinguished numismatist.
Permanent exhibition
On 26 May 2005 the Mineral Study in the Stroganov Palace was opened after restoration and recreation of interiors. The study was designed by Andrei Voronikhin in 1791-92. It was considered as one of the masterpieces of Russian architecture of the 18th century.

The Russian Museum continues to acquaint its visitors with various types and movements of contemporary art. The exhibition traces the evolution of assemblage, object and installation in Russian art. Once shocking with their novelty and peculiar nature, now they are no longer perceived as a “slap to the face of public taste” but occupy a firm place on the contemporary art scene.
Viktor Vasnetsov. 175th Anniversary of the Artist’s Birth

The retrospective anniversary exhibition exhibition brings together about 120 Vasnetsov’s works from the collections of the leading Russian museums, including the State Russian Museum, the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Viktor Vasnetsov House Museum, the Viktor and Apollinary Vasnetsov Art Museum of Vyatka, the Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum, the Abramtsevo State History, Art and Literary Museum and Reserve, the Vasily Polenov Fine Arts Museum and National Park, the State Museum of the History of Religion, etc.
Vasily Sadovnikov. A Watercolorist of the Pushkin Era

In 2025, we commemorate the 225th anniversary of the birth of Vasily Sadovnikov (1800–1879), one of Russia’s most renowned watercolourists. Vasily Sadovnikov had a long and challenging artistic journey, with St Petersburg emerging as the central theme of his work – a city with which he developed a deep connection and which he celebrated in hundreds of his watercolours.

Modern exhibition of the museum comprises items dating back to Peter I’s time, including memorial paraphernalia, such as: red broadcloth uniform, an oriental cane, a model of Peter I’s hand based on an imprint made at Lipetsk foundry in 1707, a wherry, and Peter’s armchair.
