April 21, 2016 Vladimir Gusev, director of the Russian Museum held a press conference dedicated to the first phase of the project of covering inner courtyards of the Mikhailovsky Palace.
The first phase of the project includes covering of one of the courtyards (left) with translucent light and installation the elevator to ensure the complete availability of the Mikhailovsky Palace exhibitions to people with disabilities.
Two intermediate floors at the level of the first and second floors will designed to provide an exit of the elevator, a relaxation area for visitors and a small lecture hall with 80 seats.
The project has passed all the necessary stages of approval. Work on the first phase is planned to begin in 2017 and to complete in 2019. This step eliminates any possibility of the closure of the Mikhailovsky Palace to visitors, and total evacuation of the funds.
