About the exhibition
The Russian Museum continues its series of exhibitions devoted to outstanding art historians and museum professionals, collectors, art researchers and educators.
Grigory Presnov (1890–1973) is remembered in the history of the Russian Museum as the founder and head of the Department of Sculpture. Born into a peasant family in Tver Governorate, he was a man of rare industry and energy. He fought in the First World War and tried various professions, but found his calling in the service of art. Over five decades at the Russian Museum, beginning in 1922, he assembled works of Russian and Soviet sculpture, as well as Russian coins and medals. Before the revolution, the museum held only 184 works of Russian sculpture; today the collection numbers more than 2,000 objects.
