The exhibition spotlights old Russian icons, wooden sculptures, personal sacred objects and jewellery created in various places and at different times, yet sharing the same theme. St George is one of the most highly venerated saints in Russia. His image is viewed as symbolic of Russian history. “St George and the Dragon” is the most frequently recurring subject in the Russian St George iconography.

The sketches and drawings of Mikhail Makhayev (1717–1770), the great Russian 18th-century veduta master, are the only way we have of appreciating St Petersburg’s stately appearance during the mid-18th century. The exhibition features approximately 100 works: Mikhail Makhayev’s drawings, engravings, and paintings made from his drawings by Russian and Western European artists, as well as the engraved copper plates used to print St Petersburg city views in the mid-18th century.

The exhibition “30 paintings from the life of Peter the Great” is taking place on the Field of Mars in Saint Petersburg. The project is a reconstruction of an exhibit that was held 150 years ago at the same location and is dedicated to the 350th anniversary of the first Russian emperor. Fourteen original paintings from the 1872 exhibition were discovered in the State Russian Museum’s funds. They were digitally restored and will be exhibited in the form of outstanding quality canvas prints. The honour to fill the gaps and create modern interpretations of the same historical subjects was granted to the students, alumni and professors of Saint-Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts.
