About the exhibition
A small-scale exhibition devoted to Tatyana Manturova (1921–1999) opens in Room 82 of the Benois Wing. An outstanding specialist in Russian sculpture, she devoted fifty years to the Russian Museum. From 1949 to 1999 she worked in the Department of Soviet Art, heading it from 1963. One of the central subjects of her research was the work of the legendary sculptor Alexander Matveyev. Largely owing to Manturova, the concept of the «Matveyev school» took root in scholarly circles, and today it is firmly associated with the recognisable distinctiveness of the Petersburg—Leningrad tradition. The exhibition features landmark works by sculptors of the Matveyev circle.
