The Mikhailovsky Garden

The Mikhailovsky Garden is one of the rare monuments of landscape architecture from the 18th to the first third of the 19th century. The garden represents a unique combination of two distinct styles of landscape art within a single space: the French formal garden and the English landscape garden. It is also a striking example of the architectural harmony between a building, the Mikhailovsky Palace, and its natural landscape, the Mikhailovsky Garden, conceived by the great architect Carlo Rossi.

The Mikhailovsky Garden forms part of the volumetric and spatial composition of central St Petersburg, which also includes the Summer Garden and the Field of Mars. Over its long history, the garden has undergone numerous layout changes in accordance with evolving fashion trends and the tastes of its successive owners.
