Benjamin is the Canadian photo artist, the master of the visual forms whose works are sometimes treated as the PhotoShop installations.
In fact, there is nothing but his professionalism, hard work, a lot of time spent for preparations, a great team of professionals and, most importantly, the idea that the author wants to inform spectators about, even though it requires everything mentioned above.
Some volunteers helped to make MERMAIDS HATE PLASTIC. All of them took part in collecting 10,000 plastic bottles, which Benjamin used to create his unique ocean.
He inhabited it with imaginary creatures: the mermaids, whose beautiful form very much contrasts with the plastic underwater world that they have to "live in". The author demonstrates how disastrous the garbage and the wastes poured into the ocean may turn out to be for the underwater world inhabited by such miraculous creatures.
Another topic touched upon by Benjamin was relationships between the human and the animal worlds. Shark Shepherd was shot in Fiji.
Apart from usual difficulties of the underwater shooting such as limited oxygen, specific equipment and a diver team, Benjamin had only two hours a day for filming: it was possible only from 11 am till 1 pm while sharks were active, and the daylight was visible. In the end, breathtaking photos were taken: models were very near to the sharks, and this fact destroys stereotypes about their danger for humans. "Often sharks are pictured dangerous not taking into account that people kill millions of sharks for soup", says Benjamin. "I wanted to make a photo series, which could break stereotypes about sharks and show that we can live in harmony with this predatory fish".
