Ancient Art of XIV-XVII Centuries
Permanent exhibition
Collection of the Old Russian painting of the Russian Museum is one of the largest and most significant in Russia. It includes around six thousand icons. The permanent exhibition housed in the first four halls of Mikhailovsky Palace represents a part of this collection, the most valuable works of XII-XVII centuries created in the major art centers of Old Russia: Novgorod, Pskov, Vladimir, Suzdal, Moscow, and Yaroslavl.
Russian Art of the XVIII Century
Permanent exhibition
The exposition of Russian art of XVIII century is chronologically organized and presents the main stages and trends of Russian art of this time. One part of the display is dedicated to the time of Peter I and focuses mainly on the names of Ivan Nikitin and Andrei Matveyev, the greatest portraitists and leaders of the secular Russian art of this time. Genre of portrait of the middle and second part of XVIII century is presented by such artists as Ivan Vishyakov, Alexey Antropov, Ivan Argunov, Fyodor Rokotov.
Russian Art of the First Half of the XIX Century
Permanent exhibition
The exhibition shows masterpieces representing the variety of trends in the Russian art of the time (classicism, romantism and beginning in the second third of the XIX century realism). The works by academic school masters are also widely represented: the canvases by Karl Brullov (the famous «The Last Days of Pompeii», religious compositions and portraits of the artist’s contemporaries), historical paintings by Grigory Ugryumov, Alexander Ivanov, Alexey Egorov, Fyodor Bruni.

The exhibition, dedicated to the 200th anniverary of St. Isaac's Cathedral, reveals new facts on the history of its construction and decoration. It presents drawings and cartoons made for the interior of the cathedral by such masters as Karl Bryullov, Fyodor Bruni, and others.
Permanent exhibition
On 26 May 2005 the Mineral Study in the Stroganov Palace was opened after restoration and recreation of interiors. The study was designed by Andrei Voronikhin in 1791-92. It was considered as one of the masterpieces of Russian architecture of the 18th century.

The main goal of the exhibition is to present the local features of patchwork in numerous centers of folk art in Russia and to show the original creative style of individual masters of the 20th century. The exhibition introduces the viewer to the truly folk patchwork, which was developed not in creative units and clubs, but in the villages and small towns of Russia.

The Biennale of Historical and Archival Photography once again presents inaccessible photo collections of regional museums. The exhibition will show 144 photographs from museums in Voronezh, Ivangorod, Nizhny Novgorod, Rybinsk, Ryazan, Simferopol, Omsk, Pskov, Uglich, Yakutsk. The exposition is structured as a consistent story about the cultural, everyday and political life of Russia in the 1870s - 1930s.
Moscow during the Reigns of Catherine II and Paul I in the Paintings of Gérard de la Barthe

Gérard de la Barthe, French painter and watercolorist, worked in Russia between 1787 and 1810. In the late 1790s, he created a series of watercolors and paintings depicting views of Moscow and its suburbs that earned him a reputation as a skillful landscape painter, view painter, and “figurist” masterfully rendering the everyday life of a big city.

The Russian Museum holds a large collection of works by A. Rylov including paintings and sketches of various periods, graphic works, and illustrations. A comprehensive retrospective exhibition at the St. Michael's Castle presents all stages of Rylov's path in art for the first time since his last solo exhibition in 1970.

The artists' union “Society of Russian Sculptors” (ORS – Obschestvo Russkih Skulptorov) was created in 1925 in the course of revolutionary events and construction of new culture in Russia. The main objective of this society was to unite all Russian sculptural forces, to find new plastic expression and preserve the accumulated sculptural traditions of Russian and Europe culture in art.

This exhibition will introduce viewers to the furniture preserved in the Russian Museum, a collection the public is not very familiar with. It will also open up a new perspective on well-known Russian works of art. What kinds of chairs exist? What are they made of? What do people do while seated? What poses do they adopt? What does an empty chair mean? A synthesis of painting, graphic art, sculpture, applied art, and design, the Russian Museum’s exhibition stimulates ideas on these questions and more.
