Like the titans of the Renaissance, the artist was richly gifted. His creative pursuits and achievements were far ahead of his time. Portraits of contemporaries and landscapes created by him, works inspired by Russian and ancient mythology and classical literature, are marked by high spirituality.

The title of the exhibition dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Department of Technological Research reflects the essence of its work: to study what, how, when and by whom certain works were created. The exhibition was prepared for the 200th anniversary of one of the most famous and frequently cited Russian writers - Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky (1821-1881).
His training at the Engineering School (in the 1840s), located in the Mikhailovsky (Engineering) Castle (now a branch of the Russian Museum), is an excellent occasion for the Russian Museum to pay tribute to the memory of one of the authors of the Petersburg myth by presenting an exposition of works from the museum collection in honor of this anniversary.

Count Pavel Sergeevich Stroganov (1823-1911), traveling with his family in Italy in 1839-1841, captured the image of this country in numerous drawings, which were considered the works of an unknown master until recently. At the exhibition in the halls of the palace that belonged to the Stroganovs, the Russian Museum will show 60 wonderful drawings from its collection for the first time and comment in a multimedia show how their research was carried out, which made it possible to prove the authorship of Count Pavel Stroganov.

Amerling was one of the best masters of children’s portrait of his time. The portrait of the little Count Sheremetev discovered in the State Russian Museum is the only work of the master in Russia so far. Georg Baselitz (was born in 1938 in Saxony) is one of the founders of the German Neo-expressionism. The exhibition presents paintings, drawings, watercolours of the last two decades. The major part of the works belongs to the collection of the Albertina Museum (Vienna, Austria) which made it possible for the Russian Museum to show the artist's works to the citizens of Saint-Petersburg who know his painting «Bottle and Eagle» (1977-1978) very well. This very work is a part of the collection of the Ludwig Museum at the Russian Museum.
